At first, I must admit I was not really looking forward to London. Who cares about tea time and hoity-toity kings and queens, it sounded boring and just ostentatious to say the least. Well, the ostentatious bit still stands…everything is gilded or adorned in some jewel or another, I don’t know where all this money comes from! We saw the “Crown Jewels” at the Tower of London and damn…that is the definition of bling. From the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond to countless gem-ridden crowns, scepters, and swords, the wealth, power, and importance of the royal family became very apparent. The history of this place is just phenomenal, and readily obvious at every corner.
I tried comparing the length of American history to the timeline of British history, but soon came to realize it is like comparing the span of the frequencies of the color spectrum to the entire span of electromagnetic frequencies; x-rays, gamma rays and the like. Speaking of frequencies, we went to Westminster Abbey and saw the tombs ( and/or memorial ) to various key figures in Science, namely Maxwell ( electromagnetic wave-equation ), Dirac, Green, and of course, my man Isaac Newton, “inventor” of gravity and calculus. There, they lie, in the presence of old English monarchs. But to me, they are the real kings.
We will be updating the site with posts, pictures and videos of our travels from time to time. We look forward to hearing from you all during the next few months, please keep in touch either through comments on the blog or through another medium of your choice. We already miss many of you, and not so much others… you know who you are =) Jk, jk. You are all missed, but we are very excited to be able to embark on this journey together and “arrest the momentum” of our daily lives for a little while.
Until next time,
Amit
